Earlier this fall, Redeemer’s president, Dr. Hubert Krygsman and a number of the presidents of Christian Higher Education Canada (CHEC), were in Ottawa for their annual meeting. One of the highlights of that session was a photo-op with the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, the Prime Minister of Canada. CHEC is an advocacy group representing 32 Christian universities (including Redeemer), Bible colleges and seminaries in Canada. Its Executive Director is Dr. Justin Cooper, Redeemer’s president emeritus. CHEC works to advance the efficiency and effectiveness of Christian higher education at its member schools, including, fostering institutional cooperation, and to raise public awareness of the value of Christian Higher Education in Canada. As part of the presidents’ visit to the capital, David Sweet, the MP for Redeemer’s riding of Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale, organized a breakfast meeting for them and several MPs from across the country. The breakfast was followed by a brief greeting with the Prime Minister, and included a tour of the Prime Minister’s office on Parliament Hill just outside the House of Commons. The visit provided a national profile of CHEC’s member campuses and underscored their mission and contribution to Canadian society through teaching, research and service. “We are thankful to have been able to hold significant discussions among our member presidents in our nation’s capital and to raise the profile of Christian higher education on Parliament Hill” said Cooper.
